Quilva 1.0.1
LatestA big update to the Designer and publishing: text that wraps around shapes, gradients, blur, image placeholders that pull from your Sources, custom fields with colours, EPUB and Markdown export, a shareable web page with reader comments — plus a long list of fixes.
New features
Designer
- Image from Sources — placeholder images chosen by rules: a Sources folder, a tag, an exact name, or a link to the current scene, chapter, act or book. They follow the Outliner as you click through, cycle through every matching image across a published book, and can Stretch, Crop or Fit their frame.
- Gradient fills for shapes, text and dynamic text — linear or radial, any angle and offset, as many colour stops as you like, and a switch back to solid colour.
- Blur any object, rendered at print resolution so it never pixelates.
- Crop to Shape — clip an image to any overlapping shape. The two move, rotate and scale together, and you can release them at any time.
- Cut holes with the Slice tool (a circle out of a square, say), still editable with the node tool afterwards.
- Rounded corners for shapes, and per-corner rounding for images.
- Dynamic text can turn its text in 90° steps inside the box, and has a background shape with padding, per-corner rounding, an outline (colour and thickness) and opacity.
- Colour codes everywhere — type or paste hex and rgb() codes, or a
[field:…]colour field, into any colour box, including image Colorize. - Frame placement rules — Always at top, Only upper third, Avoid lower third, Never at bottom; or Skip if at top, in the upper or lower third, or last on the page.
- Quick Publish from the Designer — export the layout on screen as PDF, PNG (white or transparent) or JPG, pick the page and folder, or batch-export every scene in the active chapter as separate files.
- Text wrap around obstacles — tick any shape as an Obstacle and the book's text flows around its outline: both sides, the largest side, one side, or above and below, with your own gap. Obstacles are never printed, follow the Link tool, apply only to their own side of a two-page spread, can be set to No repeat (once per chapter, for chapter-opening artwork), push frames and drop caps aside too, and the Designer's preview text wraps around them live.
- Columns — set Book text in 2, 3 or 4 columns with your own gap, in the Designer preview and in the Designed Book. Each page is still one page: numbering, linked items, frames and obstacles all work as before.
- Colour fields for content text — the book or script text colour can follow a
[field:…]colour field, chapter by chapter. Script content gets its own text colour too. - A tidier, resizable sidebar.
Publishing & export
- EPUB e-books from Quick Publish and Styled Book — choose the contents levels, an optional clickable contents page, embedded fonts, page margins from your settings, and a cover.
- Markdown and Rich Text (RTF) export in File ▸ Export, alongside EPUB.
- Web Page for Readers — your project as one offline web page in the Quilva Interface or Clean White style, with the Compass if you like. Readers can highlight text and leave comments, saved as a
.qlcfile. - Import Reader Comments — bring a reader's
.qlcfile in as inline comments, with your own prefix and colour. - Custom colour fields in styles and drop caps — any Styles editor colour, and the Designed Book drop cap, can follow a
[field:…]code, chapter by chapter. - The Treatment now includes your custom fields.
- Publishing a Designed Book saves your project for you first.
- Importing a Designer template tells you which styles or custom fields it uses that you don't have yet.
Writing & projects
- Custom Fields (Writing ▸ Custom Fields…) — single-line, text-area and colour fields for books, acts, chapters and scenes. Fill them in from the Compass and use them in dynamic text as
[field:key]. - Help ▸ Dynamic Text Reference and Help ▸ About Quilva.
Bug fixes
Writer
- Daily writing goals now count words written earlier in the day, before the goals were set up.
- The Compass always shows the latest cards and details after switching from another tab.
- When viewing several scenes at once, spell check works and text looks exactly as it does in single-scene view.
- Word (.docx) imports no longer add extra blank lines between paragraphs.
- Comments that span more than one paragraph stay attached to their words after editing.
Designer
- Image adjustments (hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, colorize) are smooth and no longer leave images pixelated.
- The sidebar no longer flickers when you select dynamic text.
- Shapes linked to a scene or chapter with the Link tool keep their link when the project is reopened.
- Small windows no longer flash on screen as Quilva starts.
- Layout tab settings — content settings, book, font, alignment and preview colour — are always saved with the project.
Publishing
- Paging back through Publisher previews no longer shows blank or wrong pages.
- Dynamic text backgrounds are sized correctly for every instance of a frame, without a second background behind them.
- Skipped frames leave no gap, and “Skip if at top” reliably removes ornaments that would start a page — no more lone fleurons on empty pages.
- A page break is no longer left behind when the frame that caused it is skipped.
- Drop-cap colour fields and styles you don't have installed are kept exactly when reopening a project or importing a Designer template.
- Newly created styles appear in the Publisher's style lists straight away.
